One evening in June 1636:
Lorenzo Ruiz, highly appreciated by Dominicans for whom he works as secretary, sacristan,
and calligrapher at the Binondo Church in Manila, is wrongly accused of having murdered a Spaniard.
Lorenzo, a family man and member of the «Cofradía del Santísimo, » who until now has led a quiet
and peaceful life, escapes and hides overnight in the Dominican Convent.
Father Gonzales sees only one way of escape: A ship will sail tomorrow, with Dominicans on board.
Lorenzo intends to disembark in Macao to find work and send money home. When he learns that he is mistaken,
